Anthem Lyrics

“IF I NEVER TRI”

IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER STAND, FEET IN SAND
HEART THUMPING ITS WAY OUT OF MY THROAT

IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER DIVE, TO GET OUT ALIVE
DOING WHAT SORTA RESEMBLES A STROKE

IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER PUBLICLY UNDRESS
THINKING, “WHO THE HELL GETS THEMSELF INTO THIS MESS?

I’LL NEVER BE SOAKING WET
AND NOT NEARLY DONE YET
I’LL NEVER HAVE TO WONDER IF MY TONGUE CAN SWEAT
IF I NEVER TRI

BUT IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER KNOW

MY LUNGS, MY LEGS
HOW FAR THEY’LL GO

HOW MY FEARS WILL RESPOND
TO THE CHEERS IN MY EARS

HOW I’LL CHANGE, AND EXCHANGE
INTO THREE WARRIORS WITH ONE NAME

IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER KNOW
HOW STRANGERS WILL BE THERE
STAGEHANDS TO MY SHOW

HOW SIDE-BY-SIDE
RIDE OR DIE, WE’LL STRIDE
OR WE’LL LIMP, MAYBE WHIMPER
BUT WHATEVER, WE’LL SURVIVE

IF I NEVER TRI…
I’LL NEVER KNOW
WHO I’LL BE WHEN I’M WAY OUT OF MY FLOW

SO BRING IT WATER, BIKE, LAND
IT’S NOT KNOWING I CAN’T STAND

‘CAUSE I’VE JUST GOT
THIS
ONE
LIFETIME.

Triathlon. The word itself stokes fear in the heart of so many.

This simple combination of swimming, biking and running can easily fester as life’s most daunting of challenges.

However, those willing to accept the challenge, to step into the unknown, shrug off enormous intimidation and toe the line are forever changed.

Having witnessed more than 100,000 first-timers enter the sport since 2001, we understand the fears, the questions and the challenges presented to any new triathlete. Similarly, we watch in awe as their dedication, perseverance and grit expands boundaries and transforms belief.

We love triathlon. There’s nothing else like it, and we firmly believe there’s only one thing scarier than getting into that wetsuit and jumping-in the first time: not doing it.

2018 Life Time Tri Initiatives

As a testament to our focus on inspiring and developing new athletes, Life Time Tri is proud to debut a myriad of complimentary programs and opportunities in 2018. This is our approach to triathlon made better:

All-Inclusive Pricing

No hidden fees. Our 2018 event pricing includes both insurance and online registration fees – and no requirement for a USA Triathlon membership.

Coach Support

In addition to complimentary training programs for all registrants, our series will integrate both Coaches and Race Officials within race weekend. If you participated in 2017, you likely observed our “Ask A Coach” Expo booths. This will be a standard in 2018, staffed by race-familiar experts whose duty is to offer complimentary, face to face guidance for the perfect race experience.

Better Officiating

In 2018, we’re adopting a new officiating process. Gone are the days of being surprised with 2 or 4-minute additions to your finish times. Now, should a Race Official experience a rule infraction, they will automatically communicate with athletes – who will be directed to a penalty tent beyond T2. Much like IRONMAN and ITU, athletes will serve time penalties while on-course. Once they cross the finish line, there are no modifications to timing – which alleviates many historic awards ceremony issues. Full details on 2018 rules coming soon.

Indoor Triathlons

Life Time Indoor Triathlons return January 21, 2018 to 40+ club locations across the nation. These events are the ultimate promotional opportunity for our sport. Last year, 6,000 individuals (the majority with zero tri experience) participated in the 10-minute swim, 30-minute bike and 20-minute run events. At only $30 each, these are hot commodities (each limited to 100 participants). Like our outdoor races, registration opens Nov 1.

Beginner Friendly Start Options

In 2018, participants can choose who they start with, from either “competitive” or “recreational” groups. New Friends & Family and First-Timer start categories will separate the often intense, veteran triathletes from those just having fun. Allowing athletes to start with, and participate alongside, others of their choosing is long overdue.

Life Time Tri Scholarship Program

We get it – triathlons are not cheap! To support those in financial need, Life Time Tri is proud to introduce a unique scholarship program to ease the possible financial burden. Ten race entries will be donated across each of our events.

Flexible Start Options

Some events will feature “Early Bird” or “Late Owl” start options – scheduled at the extreme ends of the day. Because these individuals are taken out of typical Age Groups, they are designated as Recreational athletes, thus not eligible for competitive awards. Capacities will vary by event.

Race Day Packet Pick-Up

Another convenience we’re incorporating into select event is race day Packet Pick Up. Available to the first 25 individuals at South Beach, CapTex, Minneapolis and Tempe (more races to come), athletes will be able to skip the Expo and check-in on race morning – a huge convenience for those with busy weekend plans, or those hoping to avoid hotels. A $25 convenience fee will apply.

Finish Line Recognition

If we’re not having fun, what’s the point?  We’re taking a stand, and mandating that everyone enjoy themselves at our races! Sure, it’s OK to be (a bit) serious, but in the end, we want to see your smiling faces at the finish line. Staff and volunteers will be there to greet you, and to properly “knight” you with some new hardware. Through our partners at Athlinks, we’ll soon celebrate first-timer finishes and PRs, too – right in the finish chute!

A Big Championship

It doesn’t get more exciting that the 2018 Life Time Tri Championship event, held within the 2018 2XU NYC Tri on July 1. We’re recognizing and rewarding the fastest athletes across the Life Time Tri Series with a blowout in NYC! Free biking shipping, a $50K prize purse and VIP access is only the beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beyond the bells and whistles of change, we’ll always bring it back to basics. While getting to know our athletes over the years, we’ve identified these as their most common questions when entering triathlon:

What is Life Time Tri?

The Life Time Tri Series is a collection of short course triathlons held in iconic, top tier U.S destinations. Our 2018 event series consists of:

Formed in 2001, the Life Time Tri Series has enhanced the lives of more than 500,000 finishers. We are America’s Premier Triathlon Series.

Who participates in triathlons?

Honestly, everyone. You’ll see athletes of all sizes, shapes and abilities participate in triathlon. First-timers generally consist of 25% of any given race field. Triathlon is a bit skewed to the guys, consisting of 60% men, and the average triathlete is 39 years old.

The sport may have a perception problem, but only 11% of any given field really cares about winning. The remaining 89% participate purely for the personal challenge. If you’re hoping to connect with like-minded athletes, you’re in good company.

What are the distances in triathlon?

Unlike the marathon, which is always 26.2 miles, triathlon is a bit vague. The term truly relates to the non-stop swim-to-bike-to-run competition, although the sport offers a variety of distances. Life Time Tri operates “short course” triathlons, which include a combination of SuperSprint, Sprint and/or International distances at our races.

How much training do I need?

Training volume is incredibly subjective to current fitness, strengths/weaknesses in each discipline, and your overall goals. As a general rule, we recommend the following for anyone first entering the sport with a basic level of fitness:

Looks manageable, right?! Curious to see what a structured training program looks like? Share your contact information in the form above. We’ll forward you a simple training blueprint to get you started.

What kind of gear to I need?

The only required gear is: a swimsuit or triathlon apparel, a bike with helmet, and shoes of some sort. There are lots of little odds and ends that make life better, but it doesn’t have to cost an arm & a leg. Here’s a quick idea of what’s practical:

What do I need to eat and drink?

What do you like to eat/drink? Start with that. As you begin training, you will notice a need for more food/fluids as you burn more calories. You will start developing routines around pre, during and post workout nutritional intake – which might include a combination of solid foods, gels, water and sports drinks. It’s best to consider training with the sports drink and solids/gels that are used on course – so you don’t have to worry about providing your own fuel. Two quick rules of thumb:

  1. You don’t need much more than water if your workout is less than 60 minutes.
  2. Never try anything new on race day (that goes for clothing, equipment and so much more).

Nutrition is never an exact science, but you will soon gain great insight into what works and what doesn’t in a variety of environments.
